Major Effects in my life

who is someone that has had a major effect in your life? Why?

I'm very pleased to say the person who had a major effect in my life was my foster parents. Yep, thats right I grew up in foster care for many years. When I was 13 year old I was taken out of the home of my Bio mom and placed into foster care. Its very hard to get close to anyone after having something like this happen. I was put in a few different homes and group homes. Then when I was two weeks away from turning 16 my whole life changed. I was taken out of the town I knew, friends I had and placed in a totally different town. I was very scared to say the least. Looking back now that was the best thing to ever happen to me. Becuase I was placed with some wonderful people. They are now the two people I call Mom & Dad and credit for me being the person I am today. I dont think I would of ever finished high school, learned to be a good mom to my boys. She always told me if "you ever treat your kids the way your mom treated you I will come kick your butt".. This has stuck in my head from then on. They always stood behind me in what ever I decided to do. Took me under there wings and treated me as one of their own children. So for that I want to say a Thank You to my Mom & Dad!!!!!! Another bit of information about the is they are today still doing foster care and changing other kids lives. When I graudated high school in 1992 my mom was noticed for her service to the community and at that time they had over 200 kids walk into their home and care for them. They are wonderful people for opening their doors to needy Children all these years.

If you have read this thank you and sorry if I went on and on about them. But they showed me so much love and it means the world to me for that love...

Happy New Years!!!

Someone who had a major effect on my life...

When I aged out of foster care, I went through a rough period. Lots of ups & downs:

-Started college (up)
-Let a troubled girl from the group home come to stay with me (down)
-She stole my money, we were evicted from several apartments, I ended up homeless (way down)
-Moved to a Methodist dorm (up)
-Met a guy named Jon who changed my life (way up)

This guy had a major effect on my life because when I met him, I didn't trust people, especially men, but he earned both my trust and my respect.

We've lost touch over the years, but I haven't forgotten.

Maureen, did I ever tell you about Foster Care Alumni of America?

Maureen, thank you so much for sharing your life with the rest of us. Your story is so touching but also so important because foster parents are often the unsung heroes of today's society. Your foster parents should be so proud of you because of the woman you have become. You made it this far through so much adversity and I know there is so much more for your life in the years to come. Your life story can have such a great impact on other people's lifes, share it every chance you get!
Have a very Happy New Year!
